New Hope – NWCRC is a ministry of our congregation that welcomes and sponsors refugees. As a community that centers its life and ministry in the person of Jesus Christ and His announcement of Good News (Gospel), one of the ways we express the good news is by extending care to the stranger and the vulnerable.
Since 1979 our church has welcomed and sponsored many from Vietnam, Cambodia, Yugoslavia and more recently our congregation has provided private sponsorship to several families from Syria and Afghanistan over the last few years.
We are grateful for a large group of folks within our congregation that pray, volunteer, and provide financial pledges to make that private sponsorship possible. To privately sponsor a refugee family for a one year commitment in BC takes a lot of funds. Private sponsorship for one year of support to a refugee family of four requires in 2020/21 was approximately $50,000.
Our last private sponsorship ended in April 2021. In 2022, our church was able to sponsor a Afghanistan family through World Renew. The family includes a grandfather, his son and his family of five, they arrived in Canada in November 2022 from Afghanistan and is now reunited with their family living in Burnaby.
We praise the Lord that another family that our church has sponsored has arrived in Vancouver. On behalf of New Hope NWCRC, John and Margaret V. welcomed the Amiri Family, who arrived in Vancouver on May 16, 2024. The Amiri family originate from Afghanistan and is very grateful to be here, as many Afghans without sponsorship arrangements are being sent back from Pakistan to Afghanistan and left to the mercy of the Taliban from whom they escaped. We pray that the Lord will bless the Amiri’s as they settle into their new home and pray that their adjustment to a new country and culture will go well.
